Atopic Dermatitis

A complex skin condition that caused a red rash or red patches of the skin commonly found in the folds of elbows, knees, hands, feet and cheeks.

What is it?

Atopic dermatitis, sometimes called eczema, often emerges in young children and can impact people of all ages. The disease causes dry, flaky skin and blisters or small bumps. Severe symptoms can include painful breaks in the skin that can sometimes bleed. Symptoms can be cyclical, with periods of flare-ups of rashes that are inflamed, itchy, irritated and painful. Flare-ups can be followed by periods of remission that can last months or even years.

Eczema refers to a wider group of skin disorders – atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. It isn't contagious, but is often very unpleasant. In young patients, symptoms from atopic dermatitis often appear on cheeks or the chin. The disease impacts all ages and symptoms can appear on any part of the skin. The condition is medically complex and can be impacted by your genes, your immune system and things that come in contact with your skin.

Significant advancements are being made in treatment of atopic dermatitis by researchers like our founder, Dr. Raj Chovatiya. The Center for Medical Dermatology + Immunology Research is proud to bring cutting-edge atopic dermatitis clinical trials, treatment and relief to long-suffering patients.

How is it treated?

While there isn't a comprehensive cure for atopic dermatitis, there are treatment options to alleviate symptoms. Some patients can find relief from topical applications such as petroleum jelly and moisturizers. Others find a successful formula using a personalized plan including treatments like:

  • Individualized skincare regimen
  • Wet wrap therapy
  • Managing triggers to prevent flare-ups
  • Prescription topical medication
  • Systemic medication
  • Light therapy

Unfortunately, many patients find that their symptoms persist without more advanced medical treatment. With a unique combination of research + treatment, our team can help bring relief to patients, even if past treatments have been unsuccessful. Recent medical advancements have led to new treatment options that can dramatically reduce, and sometimes eliminate, the painful symptoms of atopic dermatitis.

Our approach combines cutting-edge research and advanced care in the same practice, bringing unrivaled expertise directly to patients with the most complex, chronic skin conditions. We are here to help you find long-awaited relief from conditions like atopic dermatitis. Schedule a consult to see us in our convenient location in Chicago, Illinois.
