Cutaneous Lupus

An autoimmune disease that attacks healthy skin cells, causing rashes, bumps, raised patches or bumps.

What is it?

Cutaneous lupus can occur in conjunction with the more dangerous systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or may appear on its own. The cutaneous forms of lupus affect your skin when your immune system attacks healthy skin cells, resulting in inflammation. Your symptoms will depend on the specific type of cutaneous lupus you have.

Symptoms can include rashes, scaly patches, bumps, plaques or lumps. These can cause itchiness, tenderness and pain. Some forms of cutaneous lupus can result in permanent scarring or pitting of the skin, especially if left untreated.

When lupus causes a butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks, nose and forehead, it can be a sign of lupus attacking more than just your skin. These rashes sometimes appear after exposure to the sun and should not be ignored, even if they fade. SLE can be dangerous and should be diagnosed and treated promptly.

How is it treated?

Cutaneous lupus does not have a cure, but its symptoms can be treated. There is no single test to confirm you have lupus and diagnosis can take some time as tests rule out other possible conditions. Dr. Chovatiya has developed expertise in both diagnosis and treatment through his extensive experience in dermatological research. In particular, he has focused on autoimmune diseases and offers unrivaled insights and care.

Treatment plans for cutaneous lupus can include:

  • Avoiding direct sun exposure
  • Medication to treat symptoms
  • Medication to reduce inflammation
  • Treatment to reduce immune response
  • Laser therapy

Medication options may include corticosteroids, antimalarials, ointments, antiinflammatory antibiotics, retinolas, biologics or immune system medications like methotrexate, cyclosporine and mycophenolate mofeti. Treatment often requires multiple options and can take some time to perfect.
