Hidradenitis Suppurativa

This condition causes deep, painful lumps that should be treated promptly to avoid long-term symptoms or complications.

What is it?

Hidradenitis suppurativa starts in clogged hair follicles that become infected and worsen over time, creating deep lumps or nodules under the skin. As these painful lumps grow, the hair follicle eventually bursts, spreading bacteria, keratin and sweat to nearby hair follicles. This results in the symptoms spreading across the skin.

The condition often occurs in areas of your body where skin touches skin – like your armpits, inner thighs or groin. Untreated hidradenitis suppurativa spreads and worsens, often resulting in scarring that can be permanent. More severe scarring can interfere with movement. If infection from hidradenitis suppurativa spreads to other areas of the body, it can result in a more dangerous condition.

Many people with hidradenitis suppurativa have lived for years with severe pain and little relief. With a proper diagnosis and treatment, you can eliminate pain and reduce the risk of scarring. The Center for Medical Dermatology + Immunology Research specializes in caring for complex, chronic skin conditions. We are here to help you find relief.

How is it treated?

After a diagnosis, our team will develop a personalized treatment plan for you. Treatment typically includes pharmacologic therapy, pain control, wound care, a skin care plan and other adjunctive approaches. If hidradenitis suppurativa has "tunneled" through your skin, we may recommend in-office procedures to treat more severe lesions. If you have painful lumps, schedule a consultation today to avoid worsening symptoms and permanent scarring.
