Pemphigus

A rare autoimmune disorder that causes sores, blisters or bumps on your skin and mucus membranes.

What is it?

Pemphigus, a rare autoimmune disorder, manifests through blistering and sores on the skin and mucous membranes, affecting areas like the mouth, nose, throat, eyes and genitals. There are several types of pemphigus, but the two most common ones are: pemphigus vulgaris, typically involving the skin and oral mucosa, and pemphigus foliaceus, solely impacting the skin.

Triggers for pemphigus are often unknown. It can occur at any age, predominantly affecting middle-aged and older individuals. Various factors contribute to the risk of developing the disease, including ethnic backgrounds, geographical location, gender, genetic predispositions, environmental factors, medications and pre-existing medical conditions such as cancer.

The hallmark symptom of pemphigus is skin blistering, characterized by fragile blisters that are prone to rupture, forming crusty, oozing sores that are susceptible to infection. Symptom presentation varies depending on the specific type of pemphigus experienced.

Unfortunately, pemphigus requires lifelong management through continuous medical care.

How is it treated?

A personalized and tailored treatment plan is integral to addressing pemphigus. Initially, our team focuses on accurate diagnosis, which may involve procedures like a skin biopsy or blood tests to detect specific antibodies associated with the condition. Collaborating with you, we tailor an advanced treatment plan to control the spread of pemphigus and alleviate blister formation. This may include therapies like corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, biologics, antibiotics and specialized wound care.

While many individuals experience improvement with treatment over time, some may require ongoing medication at lower doses to maintain symptom control, known as the maintenance phase. Our comprehensive approach merges state-of-the-art research and specialized care, delivering unparalleled expertise to individuals with complex, chronic skin conditions such as pemphigus. We are dedicated to helping you achieve long-awaited relief—schedule a consultation at our conveniently located facility in Chicago, Illinois.
