Prurigo Nodularis

Prurigo nodularis is a chronic skin disorder characterized by multiple flesh-to-pink-colored nodules that are intensely itchy.

What is it?

Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a chronic skin disorder characterized by nodules that are intensely itchy, often accompanied by a burning or stinging sensation. These nodules typically appear on the arms, legs, abdomen and back, varying in size, distribution and color intensity. Individuals afflicted with prurigo nodularis commonly report an unrelenting itch so severe that it disrupts sleep and leads to skin breakage and bleeding. The extent of itching can range from localized areas to widespread coverage of the skin.

While prurigo nodularis can affect individuals of any age, it is most prevalent in middle-aged and older individuals. The condition is frequently linked to underlying medical conditions such as kidney failure, viral, bacterial or parasitic infections, thyroid disorders, lymphoma or other skin disorders, like atopic dermatitis. Environmental and physical factors such as sweating, heat and emotional stress can exacerbate the symptoms of prurigo nodularis.

The chronic nature of prurigo nodularis significantly impacts quality of life, often leading to sleep disturbances, continued absence from school or work, emotional distress and social limitations. Effective treatment strategies aimed at symptom alleviation are crucial for maintaining and enhancing quality of life for individuals with PN.

How is it treated?

During treatment, our primary objective is to alleviate or minimize itchiness, aiming to disrupt the itch-scratch cycle and promote healing of nodules and damaged skin. This may include blood tests or other diagnostics to screen for associated conditions. Treatment options may include anti-inflammatory creams and ointments, light therapy utilizing UV light, and injectable biologics. Implementing lifestyle adjustments at home may also further help in managing prurigo nodularis, such as using gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and over-the-counter anti-itch products.

Acknowledging the frustration and distress caused by prurigo nodularis, The Center for Medical Dermatology + Immunology Research adopts a compassionate approach to assist patients in alleviating persistent itch and discomfort. Led by our founder, Dr. Raj Chovatiya, our Center in Chicago, IL pioneers innovative clinical trials and delivers cutting-edge care to enhance accessibility to effective treatments and therapies.
