Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune condition characterized by the loss of skin pigment, resulting from the destruction of melanocytes, which are cells responsible for producing pigment.

What is it?

Vitiligo, a chronic autoimmune disorder, results in patches of skin losing their natural pigment. The condition manifests as pale white patches known as "macules," which are smaller than five millimeters, or larger "patches" exceeding five millimeters. Some individuals with vitiligo also experience whitening of hair in affected regions.

While vitiligo can develop at any age, many individuals experience the onset of white patches before reaching adulthood, sometimes even in early childhood. Most commonly seen on areas like the face, arms, hands or feet, it can progressively spread over time to encompass more skin areas. While vitiligo can affect individuals of all skin tones, lighter patches are more conspicuous on darker or tanned skin.

As an autoimmune disease, vitiligo arises from an immune system malfunction, where immune cells erroneously attack the body's own healthy tissues. It commonly co-occurs with other autoimmune conditions and may have a genetic predisposition. While no cure exists, treatments can effectively halt progression and potentially restore skin tone, offering relief and improving overall skin appearance.

How is it treated?

Treatment for vitiligo is an important consideration for patients as the disease can be associated with emotional distress and life impact. Treatment options are based on multiple factors such as age, extent, location of skin involvement, rate of disease progression, and impact on quality of life.

These treatment approaches, including various medications and light-based therapies, involve restoring color through repigmentation, or less commonly, eliminating remaining color via depigmentation for individuals with chronic, extensive, and recalcitrant disease. It's important to note that implementing a treatment regimen, whether through medication, surgery or therapy, may require several months to assess effectiveness, and a trial-and-error process may be required to identify the most suitable approach. Maintenance therapy may also be recommended to prevent relapse
